By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) and the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) said the rehabilitation project of the Municipal Airport in Belize City is at forty-five percent of completion and is now continuing.

“Minister of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, Hon. Andre Perez, has been monitoring the progress of this project and ensuring that everything is being executed according to plan,” MBECA said.

The Belize Airports Authority said in a press release that work had been delayed due to a shortage of bitumen.

“The Contractor had experienced delays in works due to a shortage of available bitumen in- country,” the BAA said.

“The project is back on track and is expected to be completed within the expected timeframe. The rehabilitation of the taxiway has been completed and is being used as a temporary runway while works are ongoing on the main runway.”

According to the BAA, the main runway cannot be used until July 29.

“The project underway seeks to stabilize undulations and also a complete resurfacing (overlay) of the entire runway,” the BAA said.

“Once completed, the rehabilitated Municipal Airport will provide enhanced facilities and services, further boosting our country’s connectivity and economic development,” MBECA said.

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation and the BAA said they thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation during this period of transformation and improvement.

The project is being supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH).
