Belize faces power shortages due to high demand in region

Posted: Wednesday, June 21, 2023. 4:27 pm CST.

By Celeste Chang: Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) was notified on Tuesday by the Comisíon Federal de Electricidad (CFE) in Mexico that it is experiencing generation power shortages due to the high demand for power in the Yucatan Peninsula. As a result, Belize’s supply will be reduced to 0 megawatts (MW) to 10 MW.

Belize’s current system demand on the grid is 106 MW, the total available in-country supply is 107.5 MW, and if any losses are sustained to the generation at this point in time there will be power outages.

While the heat is affecting the citizens of this country causing a higher demand for fans and air conditioners, the transformers are also overheating, because of the heat and the amount of power being used by consumers.

BEL advises consumers to to be power conservative and turn off electric devices, lights, fans and air conditioners that are not being used to protect our resources.
