By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said on Tuesday that the Hurricane Lisa Recovery Assistance Program (HL-RAP) is providing economic assistance to the tune of $700,000 plus to 717 small farmers.

The farmers are receiving economic assistance in digital cash and vouchers through the Digi Wallet Platform.

MAFSE said the HL-RAP is a part of its ongoing support to Belizean farmers who suffered losses due to Hurricane Lisa that hit the country in November 2022.

“Over the past days small farmers affected by Hurricane Lisa have been receiving assistance for the recovery of their livelihoods through the Belize Hurricane Lisa Recovery Assistance Program,” MAFSE said.

“The disbursement of funds comes through a secure digitalplatform where a one-time cash relief assistance is being disbursed to small farmers affected.”

The assistance aims to help farmers buy the necessary farming inputs for the next planting season and cover other essential needs.

The Ministry of Agriculture selected 717 small farmers to assist after the hurricane damage. The selection was based on three criteria: (i) the farmers have farms in the affected districts of Belize, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek; (ii) the farmers were considered as ‘smallholder farmers’ based on the farm size or livestock affected; and (iii) the farmers were registered in MAFSE’s Belize Agriculture Information Management System (BAIMS), a web-based system that collects and analyzes agriculture data.

MAFSE thanked the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Latter-Day Saint Charities, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation for their contribution to the HL-RAP.

MAFSE also commended the collaboration efforts by Digi Wallet and the World Food Programme.
