By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Twenty-five Belizean and Guatemalan farmers, butchers, and restaurateurs attended a sheep culinary workshop in San Jose Succotz in the Cayo District on Wednesday.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund’s (ICDF) Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project Phase II), aimed to train the participants in culinary skills to increase the consumption of the lamb and mutton products in Belize.

The training facilitated by MAFSE Extension Officer Frank Padron included carcass preparation, meat cutting, ingredient preparation, cooking process of stew lamb, lamb chop suey and barbecue lamb. Padron has conducted several of these workshops countrywide over the last couple of years. The workshop also covered topics of sheep nutrition and animal health presented by assistant technicians of Taiwan ICDF Sheep Project Phase II, Ken Wu and Jimmy Hsu.

The workshop was attended by fifteen sheep and goat farmers, butchers, and restaurateurs from the Cayo District and ten delegates from the Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food – MAGA) from Guatemala. The collaboration is part of a Memorandum of Agreement signed between the Governments of Belize and Guatemala in 2022 to support advancements and agriculture development in technical areas such as livestock, agro-processing, fruit trees, research, innovation, and technological transfer.

The workshop is one of the activities of the Sheep Project Phase II, which runs until 2024 and aims to develop and improve the sheep and goat industry in Belize.

MAFSE said the Governments of Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are committed to working together to support farmers in strengthening Belize’s sheep and goat industry.
