By Breaking Belize News Staff: Forty-two-year-old Cecil Gill will have to wait until September to learn his sentence after being convicted in the High Court of Belize of the murder Philip Samuels.
Gill’s trial without jury before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft ended recently with a guilty verdict. Explaining how he arrived at the verdict, Justice Sandcroft said he considered whether Gill stabbed Samuels by accident, due to provocation or in self defense, but did not find the incident to fit any of those scenarios.
Gill and Samuels, who were reportedly friends, got into an altercation that turned violent on July 3, 2017. The Crown’s key witness testified that she saw the two men wrestle to the ground and when Gill stood up he was holding a bloody knife. She also testified that when Samuels got up he was bleeding.
Gill will be sentenced on September 22.
