By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who had five previous convictions for theft was sentenced to prison time after picking up his sixth.
Fifty-three-year-old Kent Vernon was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged for stealing a tricycle valued at $1,300 and then selling it for $50. Vernon wasted no time in pleading guilty to the offense and asked the court to be lenient on him, claiming that it was his first conviction for such an offense.
However, a search of the court records revealed his attempt to deceive the Magistrate and he was sentenced to four months at the Belize Central Prison.
The owner of the stolen tricycle had reported to police that it was stolen on June 11. He reviewed surveillance footage and identified the culprit to police and Vernon was later arrested. He told police he sold the tricycle to someone he knew from Gardenia Village.
