By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Eduardo ‘Mecánico’ Esquivel will be trading punches with Mexican Roberto Rodriguez in a 10-round featherweight bout for the World Boxing Council (FECARBOX) Silver Championship at Belize City Civic Center on Saturday.

The boxing card starts at 6:00 pm.

The Belize Boxing Development Council (BBDC) Commissioner, Javier Romero, said it’s the first championship fight in Belize in the last 45 years.

“This has been years in the making,” Romero said.

“We have had several boxing events throughout the years but this is the culmination of all of that work in which what we’re now presenting to Belize is a championship belt. It is the first championship bout in Belize in the last 45 years. It is the first championship bout that is being sanctioned by a world governing body.”

The BBBD said this WBC world championship card is the first in Belize since 1978.

The boxers had their weigh-in on Thursday at Di Bruwry. Esquivel had to walk off a few ounces as he initially didn’t make the weight.

Last month the Belize Boxing Development Council said ‘talented, belligerent boxer Eduardo Esquivel’ will take on formidable Mexican opponent Roberto Rodriguez who has won 15 fights, 10 by way of knockout. He has lost three fights.

The boxing card will also feature Belizean Max ‘Pain’ Williams in a thrilling four-round Super Lightweight battle against Guatemalans Bryan Escobar.

In the co-feature 8-round fight in the mini flyweight division, former world title challenger Jessica Basulto will face April Sanchez

“Both are highly skilled fighters, and they will engage in a fierce contest to demonstrate their technical prowess and vie for victory,” the BBDC said.

“Both boxers are ranked in the top ten by the World Boxing Organization.”

The BBDC said the match card will include seven other fights that will serve as a platform for emerging Belizean boxers to make their professional debuts.
