By Aaron Humes: Investigations continue into a house fire that occurred around 10 a.m. this morning in the San Mateo area of San Pedro Town.
According to police, Bernardo Pastor, a Honduran national and mason, said he, his common-law wife, and their two children had gone out to get the bait to go fishing by the lagoon, first securing and locking the premises. 15 minutes later they were by the lagoon when they observed smoke coming from the area and heard sirens. They went back to check and found that it was their house on fire.
The 17 by 29-foot plywood and wooden structure was scorched outside and the entire inside of the building and its contents were completely destroyed by fire.
The estimated value of the house is $30,000 and their personal belongings and other content were valued at $20,000. There was no electricity in the building; the occupants were utilizing solar energy and the battery and connections were located inside the house. Initial findings by fire investigators suggested that the fire originated inside the house by the dining area, but the cause of the fire has not been determined as yet.
