Ministry of Health offers scholarships for students in nursing programs

Posted: Saturday, June 24, 2023. 3:03 pm CST.

By Celeste Chang: Did you know that there is a global shortage of nurses? The International Council of Nurses (ICN) reported that the global nurse shortage is as high as 30.6 million and during the Covid-19 pandemic those numbers were only exacerbated.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 115,000 healthcare workers died from COVID-19 between January 2020 and May 2021. With millions still sick, this shortage is damaging and can result in the exhaustion of nurses.

As the world suffers from the shortage of nurses, the Belize government, through the Ministry of Health is making an effort to ensure that the number of nurses increase.

The Ministry of Health offers 15 scholarships in bachelor’s in practical nursing. The deadline to apply is June 30.

Applicants must be Belizean, have grade point average of 2.8 and above, provide a transcript, high school diploma/associate degree, Social Security, acceptance letter from the University of Belize (UB), birth certificate/passport, two passport size pictures and one reference letter. To fill out this application visit https://www.health.gov.bz/.

Health care is extremely important and the job of nurses are not easy. They work rigorously to ensure that their patients are safe and healthy.
