By Aaron Humes: Several fires were reported over the weekend across the Belize District – from San Pedro Town to Belize City to Mahogany Heights in the far west.
The last is being investigated as a potential arson that cost an entire family, headed by a soldier of the Belize Defence Force, their property.
According to Lance Corporal Ashley Henry, he was deployed when he was informed of what happened and evacuated to check on the situation. He found that a fire gutted his two-bedroom concrete house in Mahogany Heights.
No one was at home at the time but the family lost everything. It appears from surveillance footage at the premises that two men wearing hoodies broke in and soon thereafter, the fire began.
Henry told reporters that he suspects the alleged arson is related to an altercation he said occurred with his little brother and his friends and that the culprits wanted revenge against his brother and therefore himself. He estimates that the total loss is between $45,000 to $50,000.
At least one person is reportedly in custody following the incident. Police say they are investigating and reviewing surveillance footage.
