Verdes kick off pre-season in preparation for Concacaf’s Central American Cup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After a short break following the Premier League of Belize Closing Championship, National Champions Verdes this week kicked off their pre-season to be ready for the Concacaf Central American Cup under Spanish coach José Ángel Migallón.

“Our preparation for our upcoming CONCACAF matches started today,” Verdes said in a social media post on Monday.

“Thank you for believing in and supporting us. We are committed to putting together a strong and competitive team to represent the West and our Jewel. Look out for updates as we prepare.”

The CONCACAF draw put Verdes in Group D alongside two Central American powerhouses, Costa Rica’s Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Honduras’ Motagua. The group also includes Honduran club Olancho FC and Panamanian club Sporting San Miguelito.

These are the four groups:

Group A: Saprissa, Cobán Imperial, Cartaginés, CD Universitario, and Jocoro

Group B: Olimpia, Xelajú, CAI Panama, FAS, Real Estelí

Group C: Comunicaciones, Herediano, Real España, Aguila, Diriangén

Group D: Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, Motagua, Olancho, Sporting San Miguelito, Verdes

The group stage runs from August 1-31, the quarterfinals will be held at the end of September, the semifinals and the play-in in October, and the finals in November and December. The tournament should be over by December 7.

Verdes will play the first two games at home and the final two on the road.

Verdes open against Motagua on Wednesday, August 2 at 4:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

The second game will pit them against LD Alajuelense at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, August 8 at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

In Week 3, Verdes play Sporting San Miguelito at 5:00 pm (4:00 pm Belize time) in Panama on Wednesday, August16.

For Week 4, they travel to Honduras to take on Olancho in Honduras at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, August 23. Belize and Honduras have the same time.

Concacaf said home stadiums would be confirmed later, but Verdes told Breaking Belize News that they will be playing at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

Concacaf said that after single round-robin play, the first and second-place finishers advance to the knockout stage which comprises home and away quarterfinals, play-in, semifinals, and finals. The Central American Cup champions qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 and the runners-up, two losing semifinalists, and two play-in winners for Round One.

The group stage consists of four groups:

Group A: Saprissa, Cobán Imperial, Cartaginés, CD Universitario, and Jocoro

Group B: Olimpia, Xelajú, CAI Panama, FAS, Real Estelí

Group C: Comunicaciones, Herediano, Real España, Aguila, Diriangén

Group D: Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, Motagua, Olancho, Sporting San Miguelito, Verdes

After round-robin play, where each club plays every other club in their group once, two matches at home and two matches away, the first and second-place finishers advance to the knockout stage.

The knockout stage comprises home and away quarterfinals, play-in, semifinals, and finals.

At the conclusion of the Central American Cup, the Champion qualifies for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16, and the runners-up, two losing semifinalists, and two play-in winners for Round One.

The match windows for the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup knockout stage are as follows:

Quarterfinals: September 26-28 (First Legs) and October 3-5 (Second Legs)
Semifinals and Play-In: October 24-26 (First Legs) and October 31 – November 2 (Second Legs)
Finals: November 28-30 (First Legs) and December 5-7 (Second Legs)”
