US Embassy in Belize celebrates independence anniversary in grand style

Posted: Sunday, July 2, 2023. 8:59 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a first-of-its-kind event, the United States Embassy in Belize celebrated the anniversary of the United States’ independence in a picturesque setting far from its usual location. Instead of the Embassy, the celebration was held at Mahogany Bay in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, making it a memorable occasion for all attendees.

The celebration was a colorful display of respect and unity as the American Marine Guards presented the American flag, adding a touch of military tradition to the joyful event.

The host of the day, Ambassador Michelle Kwan, welcomed distinguished guests including Governor General Froyla Tzalam. In her address, Ambassador Kwan underscored the robust partnership that exists between the US Embassy in Belize and the Belizean government and its people, reflecting on the shared values and the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

Special invitees included Belize’s Prime Minister John Briceno and the Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow. Their presence amplified the significance of the event, reflecting the political bipartisanship in celebrating American Independence.

Belizean-American Dr. Paul Whisnant also joined in on the celebration. Dr. Whisnant, founder of International Servants, has served as a missionary in Belize since 1990, and as the Honorary Humanitarian Ambassador since 2017. His dedicated service to the people of Belize was recognized, with a focus on his contribution to health and wellbeing.

Dr. Whisnant’s efforts in Belize have had a transformative impact. He regularly hosts large groups of volunteer doctors from the United States who treat hundreds of patients throughout Stann Creek and Toledo. Additionally, his organization, International Servants, feeds thousands of children daily through its Feed-A-Child program, making a substantial difference in the lives of Belizean children.

The celebration was not just about the commemoration of American Independence, but it was also a tribute to the deep and enriching connections between the US and Belize. It served as a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between these two countries, fostering mutual respect, unity, and shared progress.
