William Dawson Basketball Tournament enters third month

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Police Department’s ongoing peace effort, the William Dawson Sprite – Digi Youth Basketball Tournament 2023, has entered its third month.

The tournament, named after the late William Dawson, former Director of the Leadership Intervention Union, assembled 288 players from 24 teams to play a total of 14 games this weekend. The games were played on Saturday, July 1, at the Lopez Mateos Basketball court in Belize City.

The results of those games are as follows:

Court A

Game 1- Tora Bora defeated Mahogany Heights, 26-21

Game 2 – Hatteville Underdogs defeated Freetown Hitters, 61-29

Game 3 – 2.0 BZ defeated Sandhill Heats, 60-23

Game 4 – Boom Ballers defeated Casava Youths, 53-47

Game 5 – Rockville Hardnocks won over Ebony Lake by default, 20-0

Game 6 – Hattieville Underdogs defeated Protel BPO, 63-46

Game 7 – Hard Rock Boyz defeated Kraal Road Boyz, 63-52

Court B

Game 1 – Fort George defeated Sandhill Heats 37-28

Game 2 – Boom Ballers defeated Rockville Hardnocks. 60-35

Game 3 – Mahogany Heights defeated Jaguars, 51-45

Game 4 – Unruly Boys deleated Team Police, 43-40

Game 5 – City Boys defeated Balling Bulldogs, 43-30

Game 6 – Complex Titans defeated Dan One, 29-21

Game 7 – Port Loyola Titans defeated Third World Ballers, 33-29.

Douglas Hyde, one of the coordinators of the initiative took to social media this weekend to applaud the players and thank the numerous entities that have collaborated to make the games possible.

“…we are continuing the vision of our brother, the late Mr. William Dawson, and the Leadership Intervention Unit, along with these 288 Basketball players, who choose peace & unity through sports in this positive youth, crime/violence intervention,” Hyde said.

The tournament continues on Saturday, July 8, with another 14 games set to be played in Belize City.
