International News: United States concerned interference could undermine Guatemala election

Posted: Monday, July 3, 2023. 3:10 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the U.S. is deeply concerned about efforts to interfere with Guatemala’s first-round presidential election result, Reuters report.

In addition, the U.S. Secretary of State said that the U.S. government endorsed findings from observers including the Organization of American States over the vote’s validity.

Meanwhile on Saturday, a Guatemalan court ordered that ballots from last week’s presidential election be reviewed after the results were challenged.

Former first lady, Sandra Torres won the first round and she alleges votes were manipulated.

Candidate Bernardo Arevalo became a close runner-up and described Torres’ vote review request as lacking legal merit and endangering the electoral process.

Guatemala’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement requesting respect for its sovereignty and the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs.
