By Aaron Humes: Business at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court offices on Coney Drive was interrupted at high noon today following an unexpected positive COVID-19 result for a security guard working there.

An official notice read, “The general public is hereby notified that the Magistrate’s Court office located at 1729 Coney Drive in Belize City will be closed midday today, 4th July 2023. Court resumes on 5th July 2023. Management regrets any inconvenience caused by this closure. Any queries or concerns can be addressed by email to the following: [email protected]. (Signed) Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola.”

We understand that the closure is a precautionary measure for the safety of staff and the public. The security guard was reportedly asymptomatic and had been in contact with visitors to the court and staff for several days before the result. Other tests were conducted but so far no one else has tested positive for the virus.

L&D Sanitation Company from Orange Walk Town began to clean the building shortly after noon and this is expected to take approximately three to four hours.

The Magistracy suffered multiple closures at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, 2021, and even into 2022 but this is the first instance recorded since it moved to Coney Drive starting on January 9, 2023.

It is a reminder that COVID-19 has not entirely gone away and people should be cautious in circumstances where it is possible to spread.
