By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Guatemala beat Guadeloupe 3-2 in a come-from behind win to top Group D in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup with seven points and qualify for the Quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Guatemala got even with Guadeloupe who had eliminated them in a drawn-out heart stopping penalty shootout in the 2021 Gold Cup Prelims after a 1-1 regulation draw. This is the first time Guatemala topped a Group in a Concacaf Gold Cup.
Canada qualified in second place with five points on a 4-1 routing of Cuba.
Guatemala hadn’t qualified to the Quarterfinals since 2011. Now, they did so under the tutelage of Mexican coach Luis Fernando Tena.
Panama and Costa Rica qualified from Group C on Tuesday as well.
Costa Rica defeated Martinique 6-4 in a goal fest to advance over Martinique (3 points) and El Salvador (2 points) who only managed a 2-2 draw with Panama.
Panama advanced in first place with seven points while Costa Rica did so on four.
Mexico and Qatar had already qualified from Group B while the United and Jamaica advanced from Group A.
St Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago were left behind by the Americans and Jamaicans, while Honduras and Haiti were left abandoned by the Mexicans and Qataris.
Panama will play Qatar in the Quarterfinals on Friday while Mexico will face Costa Rica.
On Saturday, Guatemala take on Jamaica while the United States clash with Canada in a full North American encounter.
