Temperatures expected to soar as El Niño weather pattern returns

Posted: Wednesday, July 5, 2023. 1:57 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Meteorological Organization says that temperatures are expected to continue to soar across the world as the El Nino weather pattern emerges, Reuters report.

The El Nino phenomenon is a warming of water surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean and linked to extreme weather conditions from tropical cyclones to heavy rainfall to severe droughts.

The World Met Organization said that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, would be the warmest on record due to El Nino and anthropogenic global warming.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization announced that it is preparing for an increased spread of viral diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya linked to El Nino.

Several countries around the world have experienced extreme heatwaves and droughts.
