By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Four Belizean canoeists Amado Cruz, Andres Cabb, Diana Velasquez Alford and Avis Guydis are competing on Thursday morning at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic.
In the first event at 7:30 am at Presa El Rincón, Cabb finished 8th in a field of nine in the Men’s Kayak Single 1000m Finals. He was timed at 4 minutes, 20.68 second (4:20.68). That was 37.29 seconds slower than winner Leocadio Pintó from Colombia who clocked 3:43:39. Silver was taken by Robert Benitez of Cuba in 3:45.36 and bronze by Cristian Guerrero of the Dominican Republic in 3:47.61.
Then at 9:40 am, Cruz and Cabb finished eighth in the Men’s Kayak Double 500m Finals against canoeists from Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and two athletes who can’t compete under their country’s flag.
Cubans Robert Benítez and Yan Samé took gold in 1:38.03 followed by Venezuelans Cristian Canache and Ray Acuña, clocked 1:38.76 and Mexicans Jose Eguia and Alberto Briones who captured bronze in 1:38.80.
Cabb and Cruz clocked 1:55.83, 17.80 seconds behind the Cubans.
Earlier at 8:40 am, Cruz and Cabb finished fourth in the Men’s Kayak Double 500m Heat 1 against canoeists from Colombia, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and two athletes who can’t compete under their country’s flag. Cruz and Cabb were timed at 1:51:68, eight seconds behind Cubans Benítez and Yan Samé who won the heat in 1:43.68. Colombians Victor Barón and Miguel Pinzon took second in 1:45.21 and independent athletes Cristian López and Juan Guevara were third in 1:45.80. The Trinidadians finished fifth place in 1:55.64.
Heat 2 was won by eventual silver medallists Venezuelans Canache and Acuña who clocked 1:41.62.
At 9:00 am, Velasquez and Guydis finished fifth in the Women’s Kayak Double 500m Finals against athletes from Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. The Belizean duo were clocked at 2:46.08, 55 seconds behind winners Daylen Rodríguez and Yurieni Guerra from Cuba who were timed at 1:51.08. Mexicans Karina Alania and Maricela Montemayor clinched silver in 1:54.28 and Colombians Tatiana Muñoz and Diexe Molina took bronze in 2:01.80.
Velasquez will compete again on Friday in the Women’s Kayak Singles 500m Finals at 7:30 am and Guydis will compete on Saturday at 7:50 am in the women’s Kayak Single 200m Finals.
Cruz will again take to the waters at Presa El Rincón on Saturday in the Men’s Kayak Single 200m at 7:30 am
