Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarria finishes 8th, 3 seconds behind winner in Men’s Road Race at Central American & Caribbean Games; Oscar Quiroz places 18th

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The two Belizean cyclists at the Central American & Caribbean Games in El Salvador put on a spectacular performance on Friday. Derrick Chavarria finished in 8th place just three seconds behind gold medal winner, Venezuelan Orluis Aular, in the Men’s Road Race at Central American & Caribbean Games in El Salvador. Oscar Quiroz placed 18th; 19 seconds behind.

During the 14th lap out of 17, Chavarria was two seconds behind, and Quiroz was three seconds off.

clocked 3 hours, 51 minutes, and 10 seconds (3:51:10) for the 166 km (103.75 miles), two seconds ahead of Colombia Miguel Angel López Moreno (silver) and Guatemalan Dorian Monterroso (bronze).  Incidentally, the Guatemalan Olympic Committee was suspended by the International Olympic Committee on October 15, 2022. As a result, Guatemalan athletes are competing as Independent Athletes under the Centro Caribe Sports flag.

Chavarria completed the race in 3:51:13 and Quiroz in 3:51:29.

Mexican Eder Frayre and Panamanian Alex Atrah shared the lead for the first ten laps, Frayre continued alone in the lead up to lap 13 after which he was overtaken by Colombian Miguel Angel López Moreno and Mexican Ignacio Prado.

Chavarria was in eighth place during Lap 14, dropping to 9th by the end of the lap. Quiroz was 11th. He finished the lap in 14th place. After that lap, both Belizean riders were just three seconds behind the leader after 3:12:34 of riding.

On Wednesday, Quiroz finished 12th and Derrick Chavarria 17th in a field of 18 in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the Ichanmichen Water Park in the city of Zacatecoluca on Wednesday morning. Top seeded Colombian López Moreno won gold in 49 minutes, 7.94 seconds (49:7.94). Quiroz clocked 57:18:40. He was 8:10.46 behind López. Chavarria was off by 10:16.93, timed at 59:24.87.

Earlier on Friday, Kaya Cattouse finished 27th in a field of 36 riders in the Women’s Road Race at the Central American & Caribbean Games in El Salvador.

Cattouse clocked 2 hours, 57 minutes, and 49 seconds (2:57:49), 5 minutes and 36 seconds (5:36) behind the winner, Cuba Arlenis Sierra who was timed at 2:52:13. Sierra also won the Individual Time Trial on Wednesday.
