Elections and Boundaries Commission confirms end of redistricting exercise; proposals headed to National Assembly

Posted: Friday, July 7, 2023. 4:09 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Only weeks ahead of the deadline set by consent order of the High Court, the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has informed that the re-division exercise it started last February is complete.

A task force was assembled “to consider the distribution of the population throughout Belize and make proposals for dividing Belize into electoral divisions in such a way that each electoral division shall have “as nearly as may be an equal number of persons eligible to vote”, with the total number of electoral divisions not being less than twenty-eight (28).”

As now required by Section 90(3) of the Belize Constitution the redistricting proposals are to be laid before the National Assembly by the Chairman of the Elections and Boundaries Commission. EBC Chairman Oscar Sabido-Puga will hereafter present a copy of the report containing the proposals of the Commission to the National Assembly to be laid on the table of the House of Representatives.

The Commission also attempts to forestall the publication and/or dissemination of the report, prior to said Report being laid on the Table of the House of Representatives; however, parts of the report have already been leaked and commented on widely.

It is expected that there will be a minimal increase in electoral divisions from the current 31, with fewer divisions in Belize City and splits in the largest ones such as Stann Creek West, Belmopan and in Cayo and Orange Walk.
