Accused murderer Shereema Neal gets court-appointed attorney as trial date draws near

By Aaron Humes: Months before she faces trial on a murder charge, accused Shereema Neal was appointed a defense counsel at her case management conference.

Neal will be represented by attorney Paulette Elrington after convincing High Court Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft that she could not otherwise afford one on a capital charge.

The mother of six is accused of the murder of a 17-year-old minor in Mahogany Heights Village, Jasmine Petillo, which occurred 7 years ago.

After checking into whether Neal has been adhering to the conditions of her bail, she was ordered by the judge to sign in at the police station 6 days a week, from Monday to Saturday. The trial is tentatively expected to commence on September 28.

The arrest of Neal came 5 years after the murder of Petillo, when Neal was eight months pregnant.

Petillo was reportedly stabbed as many as 57 times, then wrapped up in a quilt and dragged some 400 yards outside of the house she slept in and dumped in a ditch. Police say the teenager’s murder was likely revenge and linked to another murder, that of Desmond Usher alias “Mumuch” in June 2015, who was the boyfriend of Neal.

As many as four others were being sought in connection with the case but to date only Neal is facing a charge of murder.
