Four from Toledo imprisoned for manslaughter

By Aaron Humes: Four men from the Toledo District found guilty at trial of manslaughter charges were sentenced to terms of between 13 and 15 years imprisonment this week by High Court Justice Antoinette Moore.

Justice Moore sentenced Sabanito Cal to 15 years with effect from 26th April 2017; Tyrone Ba was sentenced to 13 years with effect from 26th April 2017; Arnoldo Xol was sentenced to 15 years with effect from 26th April 2017 and Leonardo Ba was sentenced to 15 years with effect from 17th May 2017. All were found guilty of causing the death of Santiago Garcia during a machete-wielding attack in Trio Village, Toledo District in 2017.

The group of men were initially charged with murder but were found at a trial ending on June 19 not guilty of that crime, but guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Santiago Garcia was chopped over his head, face, and hands with machetes produced by the four accused men which led to his death.

The four now-convicted men engaged in a verbal altercation with Arturo Rax, Arturo Choc, and Santiago Garcia which became a machete fight with Rax and Choc. The former two turned tail and ran away and Santiago Garcia followed them but as he tried to leave, he fell to the ground and the convicts started to chop him up.

After inflicting bodily harm to Garcia the men fled the scene, leaving him to die.

Sabanito Cal was represented by Leeroy Banner; Tyrone Ba was represented by Emerita Anderson; Arnoldo Xol was represented by Ronell Gonzalez and Leonardo Ba was represented by Oscar Selgado while the Crown was represented by Senior Crown Counsel Javier Chan at the Punta Gorda High Court.
