By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The management of cold storage units and contract farming was the focus of a two-day training session facilitated by the Department of Cooperatives this week for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) beneficiaries from the Orange Walk and Corozal District.
The training, conducted by Cooperative Officer Hugo Miranda and Project Execution Unit Monitoring Officer Jose Tillett, aimed to equip the beneficiaries with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage cold storage units and engage in contract farming, in order to strengthen the school feeding program’s capacity to provide consistent, high-quality meals to students in the Orange Walk and Corozal Districts.
The participants learned about the different aspects of cold storage management, such as optimal temperature and humidity levels for different crops, proper storage techniques to prevent spoilage and maintain freshness, and effective inventory management practices to stock and minimize wastage. The training also covered topics such as handling and transportation of goods, maintenance of cold storage equipment, and safety protocols.
The training session also emphasized how contract farming can benefit the school feeding program. Contract farming is a form of agreement between farmers and buyers, where the farmers agree to produce specific crops or products that meet certain quality and quantity standards. This way, the school feeding program can ensure a reliable source of fresh and nutritious food items, which helps with better planning and guarantees the provision of meals for the students.
