By Breaking Belize News Staff: A tragic building collapse in Brazil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco led to the death of at least 11 people, including four children, according to CNN’s affiliate, CNN Brasil. The unfortunate incident took place on Friday and was confirmed by the state’s Secretariat of Social Defense (SDS).
As CNN Brasil, quoting SDS, reported, the children who died in the disaster were aged five, eight, twelve, and sixteen. Moreover, a 19-year-old’s life was also claimed by the collapse, with their body recovered from the debris by the Fire Department on Saturday morning.
In the aftermath of the building collapse in the Janga neighborhood, on the fringes of the state capital, Recife, three people were pulled out alive, SDS disclosed. However, out of those rescued, one succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, while ten others were found dead amidst the rubble.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the Conjunto Beira Mar building site, as three individuals, including two children, are still missing. Firefighters and public safety teams are actively involved in the rescue efforts, confirmed SDS on its Facebook page on Friday.
As CNN Brasil reported, citing SDS, this incident has brought a wave of grief and shock to the region, underscoring the urgency for proper building safety measures and protocols in the region.
