Ukraine-Russia War must end for NATO membership consideration, asserts President Biden

Posted: Sunday, July 9, 2023. 7:11 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: President Joe Biden, in an exclusive interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, said that Ukraine’s prospective membership in NATO would be considered only after the end of the ongoing war with Russia. Biden also discussed several other key global challenges, including China, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.

While emphasizing that discussions of Ukraine’s immediate membership in NATO were premature, Biden assured that the US, along with its NATO allies, would continue supporting President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces with the security and weaponry they need to strive for peace.

“I don’t think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war,” Biden explained. The President, planning for a weeklong trip to Europe, noted that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Zelensky’s push for NATO membership will be major topics during the NATO summit in Lithuania.

Biden has had extensive discussions with Zelensky regarding the situation, assuring the Ukrainian leader of the continued support from the US, mirroring its relationship with Israel. He also noted that before voting on Ukraine’s NATO membership, there are other qualifications that need to be met, including democratization.

Addressing the controversial decision of sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, Biden expressed that it was a “difficult decision”, but ultimately necessary as Ukraine was running low on ammunition.

In the backdrop of the NATO meeting, Biden also touched on Sweden’s aspirations to join the Western alliance, a move met with resistance from Turkey and Hungary. Biden expressed optimism about Sweden’s eventual admission, referencing the modernization of the F-16 fleet by key holdouts, Turkey, and Greece.

Regarding China, Biden expressed confidence in establishing a beneficial working relationship. Despite China’s ambitions to surpass the US in economic and military might, Biden believes cooperation is possible.

On the topic of Israel, Biden highlighted that the country’s President Isaac Herzog would soon be visiting the White House. He reiterated his belief in a two-state solution as the best way forward for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and criticized some members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet for their views on Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Finally, Biden defended his trip to Saudi Arabia last year, noting successes such as establishing Israeli overflights over Saudi Arabia. However, he stated that the US was far from providing a defense treaty and civilian nuclear capacity, as Riyadh has requested.
