By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Seven teams have punched their tickets for the Quarterfinals of the National Amateur Interdistrict Championship. The last club to qualify will be determined on Wednesday in Dangriga between the Griga Conquerors and San Pedro’s Terror Squad.

Their Round of 16 match was called off Saturday because the pitch at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga was flooded after torrential rains on Friday night and Saturday morning. With Griga Conquerors leading the series 2-0, the back match will be played on Wednesday at 7:30 pm at the same venue.

All the other seven games were played as scheduled.

Action started on Friday when Club Atletico drew 3-3 with Bamba’s at Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence qualifying on a 5-3 aggregate score to the Quarterfinals. Dylon Gongora recorded a brace with goals in the 7’ and 32’ and Camilo Sanchez sealed the deal Atletico in the 51’. Gabriel Ramos Jr got Bambas back into play in the 27’ but they were to fall behind 3-1 as Atletico came roaring back. By the time Rollin Burgess scored from a penalty kick in the 85’, they knew they needed a miracle. They kept on the hunt and got another from Ramos in the 89’ with another penalty kick, but even though they tied the match, Bambas fell short because of the first leg 2-0 loss in Belmopan.

On Saturday, Lake I eliminated Sindbad despite losing 2-0 against the Orange Walk club at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City because of their insurance 3-nil win in Orange Walk the previous week. Goals by Osmar Duran in the 68’ and Leonardo Canul in the 78’ for Sindbad, however, had Lake I praying for the long whistle.

In the most uneven series of the Round of 16, Napoles ran over Flames 8-0 at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium on Saturday to advance on a 13-1 aggregate score after beating them 5-1 in Leg 1 in Cayo. Daijon Daniels registered a haul striking in the 21’,37’,67’, and 90’+3. The other goals were scored by Darren Myers (17’), Kyle Thomas (35’), Nigel Carbajal (77’), and Jaheem Wiltshire (90’+2).

On Sunday, the Caribbean Rum Boyz punched in their ticket for the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over the Midsouth’s 501 Spartans at the People Stadium in Orange Walk Town. The Rum Boyz got busy in a hurry racking up the three goals in the first 22 minutes to secure the victory. Alwin Zelaya (7’), Shane Morgan (16’), and Nazim Aldana (22’) took out the Spartans who looked nowhere near the confident team that the previous week had managed a 0-0 against the Orange Walk side in Independence.

Caesar Ridge were seeking revenge against the Calcutta Bulls at the Marion Jones in Belize City but again fell by the same 2-1 score to the Corozal side to bow out on a 4-2 aggregate. The Bulls move on. Augustine Smith gave Caesar Ridge hope when he smacked in the opener in the 34’ but Ian Daniels struck a brace in the 56’ and 67’ to kill those aspirations.

In the South in the Battle of Toledo, the Mavericks United and Top Shottaz had to go into exciting extra time to determine who would advance. In the end, Mavericks prevailed on a 4-3 aggregate score. Just like the previous week, in regulation time, they again drew 1-1 with late goals. Andres Miranda, who would finish with a brace, nailed the opener in the 83’ to put the Mavericks ahead but Zidane Hines drew even in the 88’ off a penalty kick.

The series tied at 2-2, the two Toledo sides went into extra time at the Victor Sanchez Union Field. Jarren Lambey hammered the lead in the 100’ and Miranda scored the game winner in the 113’. But not giving up, the Top Shottaz powered forward with Harrison Roches making it 3-2 in the 119’. But time ran out on the Shottaz and the Mavericks live to see another day.

In San Pedro, the Shark Shooters upended the Silk Grass Ballerz 4-0 at Ambergris Stadium to overturn their 2-0 lead and advance on a 4-2 aggregate score. Confidence might have done in the visiting Stann Creek side. They held the fort for the first 60 minutes, but then everything crumbled when the Shark Shooters turned sharpshooters nailing in two in one after the other. Steven Baizar hammered the first in the 60’ and Harold Ramos complemented that action in the 61’. Then, they repeated the feat in the 82’ with two more goals scored even faster than the first pair to finish off the Silk Grass Ballerz 4-0.

The Quarterfinals are now set. Napoles will face the Calcutta Bulls on Friday, July 14, at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan. Club Atletico will host the Shark Shooters on Saturday, July 15, at the Isidoro. Lake I will clash with Mavericks United on Sunday at the Victor Sanchez in PG and the Caribbean Rum Boyz will be at home at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk against the winners of the series between the Griga Conquerors and Terror Squad.
