By Aaron Humes: After being deported from the United States, 33-year-old Erwin Fitzgibbon of Benbow Street, Belize City, is spending 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to contempt of a judicial for flouting his bail conditions and sneaking out of Belize to avoid facing a charge of being a member of a gang.
Fitzgibbon was granted bail on the charge in July of 2022 through the High Court and as part of his conditions, he was to report to police from Monday to Friday, reappear in court on July 9 as part of the continuation of his case; surrender his travel documents to the clerk of court; and not leave the jurisdiction without permission.
Fitzgibbon failed to follow each of these conditions and fled to the United States, where he was recently captured and from which he was deported.
For the offenses, Magistrate Brown sentenced him to 3 months imprisonment for each count, a total of 12 months; but since the offenses all arose from one set of circumstances, Fitzgibbon’s sentences were ordered to run concurrently instead of consecutively; hence he will only serve 3 months imprisonment effective today and ending on October 11.
