Violent burglary in Cayo District: Police arrest two, search continues for remaining suspects

Posted: Tuesday, July 11, 2023. 7:07 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A home on the San Antonio Cristo Rey Road, Cayo District, was the scene of a brazen aggravated burglary on Monday, July 10, 2023. San Ignacio Police received a report of the crime at 11:30 am, and alongside the Special Branch, they promptly responded.

Upon reaching the home located seven miles out on San Antonio Road, the officers found the 40-year-old Belizean carpenter who lived at the residence and the 37-year-old caretaker of the estate, both visibly shaken.

According to the caretaker’s account, he was accosted by five masked men of Hispanic descent around 10:00 am while working on a trail on the property. The assailants, who were armed with shotguns and handguns, escorted him back to the house where they captured and tied up a 14-year-old boy who was in the residence alone.

The intruders demanded to know the whereabouts of a safe box said to contain cash and firearms. Despite the caretaker’s claims of not knowing its location, the criminals proceeded to ransack the house, seizing two school bags, an assortment of jewelry, a small gray safe box, and a large six-foot by two-foot safe box, which they were unable to open.

Following their unsuccessful attempt to break open the larger safe, they helped themselves to beers and an array of liquors from the home’s bar. The perpetrators then stole a black Toyota Hilux parked in the garage and fled the scene.

Later that day, the San Ignacio Crimes Investigation Branch and a Special Branch officer discovered a white quilt on the Mystic River Road. An 18-year-old male, wearing a black T-shirt and camouflage pants, was apprehended in the area. After being questioned, the young man confessed to participating in the burglary. He directed the police to the hidden Toyota Hilux and indicated the direction his accomplices had taken.

During a follow-up search of the area, officers came under gunfire from two Hispanic men. The officers retreated and called for backup. Upon the arrival of additional personnel, a 23-year-old suspect was apprehended. A large brown safe box and numerous stolen items, including cameras, binoculars, assorted liquors, and a pellet gun, were recovered at the scene.

The 18-year-old also led the police officers to a black and gray pump-action shotgun, cleared of two 12-gauge cartridges. The two suspects and all recovered items were escorted to the San Ignacio Police Station.

Both suspects were detained and are pending further investigation into the aggravated burglary, while the search continues for the remaining three suspects.
