By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) says that with the completion of the Coastal Plains Highway, Government is now turning its attention to the George Price Highway, including the rebuilding of Belize City’s Belcan and Swing Bridges.
The Government of Belize Press Office said in a statement that the George Price Highway project will upgrade the section of the road that connects the Capital with Belize City.
“We have finished the feasibility study for the George Price Highway which is from Belize City to Belmopan,” MIDH Minister Julius Espat said.
“That in our opinion is a critical project because that involves not only the highway but the rebuilding of the Swing Bridge and the Belcan Bridge. Those are in a critical situation right now; structurally unsafe.”

Minister Espat said the Government of Belize is seeking financing for the project.
“And so, we’re hoping, we’re looking at all lending institutions, we’re looking at all donor countries that can assist us,” Minister Espat said.
“We have been working along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, with everybody possible because we believe that’s a critical project. If you’ve seen that highway, it’s narrowing to a point that it’s becoming unacceptable and you leave it for one or two years more, and it will be a difficult situation.”
