By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The International Forum for Technological Dissemination of Soursop was held on Thursday at the Ministry of Sustainable Development’s Conference Room in Belmopan. The forum was hosted by Mexico’s Southeast Regional Research Center of the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research (INIFAP) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
According to MAFSE, INIFAP México is a leading research institution that supports production capacity in Mexico and other countries, such as Belize, through bilateral agreements. The research institute has been providing technical assistance and knowledge transfer to Belizean stakeholders on soursop. However, the cooperation agreement between both countries also includes cooperation on coconut, pitahaya, and soybeans.
Through the cooperation program agreed by the Governments of Mexico and Belize, INIFAP México has also collaborated with Belizean research institutions on joint research projects to improve agricultural productivity and address common challenges.
Additionally, exchange programs between farmers, researchers, and technicians from both countries have been conducted to facilitate learning, observation, and cultural exchange.
The forum opening was attended by Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai, Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Victoriano Pascual, Lead Technical Officer for INIFAP Dr Alejandro Cano, Chief of Mission within the Mexican Embassy Vladimir Hernandez, farmers, and technical officers from MAFSE, the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC), and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).
