Trio arraigned for active gang membership

Posted: Thursday, July 13, 2023. 9:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Since last week Friday and in the wake of two murders and multiple shooting incidents in Belize City, particularly in areas said to be inhabited by gangs, police have made a renewed effort to identify and remove suspected gangsters from the streets.

Appearing in court were 19-year-old Daniel Tillett, brother of recent murder victim Gabriel Tillett; Mervin Martin of Antelope Street Extension and Alrick Lamb of Pelican Street, Belize City.

Tillett and Martin are alleged associates of the Jerusalem Bone Yard Crips while Lamb is allegedly a member of the Antelope Horse and Carriage One Slap Clique. But each denied the charge when appearing in court.

Being a member of a gang is one of those criminal offenses where persons accused are unable to be granted bail at their first arraignment, and are remanded to prison until 90 days have elapsed, but can apply for High Court bail within a week after being remanded to prison.

Tillett and Martin were remanded until September 13 and Lamb until September 8.
