By Aaron Humes: Two months after her disappearance and the subsequent discovery of her body off the Hummingbird Highway, Police say they still do not have all the evidence they need to put away the suspected killer of Imari Galvez, 19.
Some of that evidence, they believe, lies in her iPhone 13, the latest model for which according to the United States Embassy “there is no forensic tool advanced enough to unlock”, certainly not for another estimated two years.
As explained by Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, the information they want is not in short messages or calls but in the encrypted apps such as WhatsApp for which Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), has no information
But does that dash any hope at all of solving Imari’s murder? No, says the Commissioner, because he still believes those closest to her hold the answers: “I would just like the family to understand that the investigation is not an easy one. I am sure they are that it is difficult because the circumstances under which she went from home are not ones where there were witnesses around who could have said who she went with. Again, getting witnesses to be able to come forward who would have seen her with the person we believe is the suspect is not forthcoming. So again we would like to appeal to the family, if they know anything that they believe would be able to help us come closer to the person of interest then we would appreciate that assistance from them.”
Commissioner Williams preferred not to detail that angle but did allow that DNA testing will be done on blood stains found in the main suspect’s vehicle. He also cleared Woodrow West, the football goalkeeper and ex of Galvez, of alleged involvement despite their “rocky relationship.”
As for the Galvez family, her father Stanley told Channel 7 News that he continues his own investigation and that they will ask for the cell phone back to see if they can reach out directly to manufacturers Apple Incorporated for assistance.
If you have any information that can assist in solving the crime, contact Crimestoppers or the nearest police station.
