U-19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship is underway at the Civic; Belize win first game

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Under 19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship started off with a bang on Sunday at the Belize City Civic Center in front of a sizable crowd. The tournament, organized by the Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) in conjunction with the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL), features all seven Central American countries and Costa Rica as the defending champions.

Hosts Belize routed Panama 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-13) in the main game of the opening triple-header at the Civic.

In the first game of the day, El Salvador defeated Honduras 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 18-25, 25-15). Then in the second encounter, Nicaragua dropped Guatemala in the second game 3-1 (25-23, 25-14, 20-25, 25-21).

The tournament runs through the entire week with games at 2:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 7:30 pm. Belize play all their games at 7:30 pm, with exception of Tuesday, when it’s rest day for the National Team.

On Monday night, Belize will be taking on powerhouse Central American champions Costa Rica. If our young women are to have any chance at winning the tournament, they must beat Costa Rica.

The tournament closes on Saturday.
