By Aaron Humes: Desperate times drove 40-year-old Rudolpho Cocom to desperate measures, but he was lucky to avoid a stint behind bars to add to his woes.
Cocom, of the Los Lagos area between Ladyville and Burrell Boom, Belize District, was charged with attempted robbery with an imitation firearm of an employee of Vin Fa Shopping Center, on Cemetery Road, Belize City, on July 13.
He was accused of visiting the store masked and armed and demanding money from the clerk in charge of the Mega Bingo sales. When she told him she had none, he decided not to escalate and walked out without anything.
But police tracked him down using the store’s surveillance footage and brought him to court.
Cocom entered a guilty plea before Magistrate Tehri-Ann Brown, who noted that attempted robbery carries a penalty similar to robbery on conviction, a period of incarceration of no less than five years, and a maximum of ten.
But she took into account his guilty plea, obvious remorse, and clean record and imposed a fine of $1,000 and cost of court due by November 30, in default one year in prison.
However, according to Cocom, that is the least of his troubles. In court he claimed he was being pressured by a Mexican national for money; this person has been threatening to hurt his family.
When our court reporter asked to verify the details of his story, he responded as above: “If yuh give meh 12 grand right now, ah wah tell yuh my side ah the story.”
