Citizens urged to have hurricane preparedness plan

Posted: Wednesday, July 19, 2023. 9:02 pm CST.

By Celeste Chang: An advisory from the Government Press Office, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the National Meteorological Service urges the public to be prepared in the event of a hurricane by following a few simple steps.

“Persons should avoid building near the coast, near swamps, or rivers. Homeowners should build their homes at least 8-feet off the ground to avoid flooding. Secure your homes by protecting the windows with plywood or shutters,” the advisory noted

“Keep your yards clean, trim trees, clean your drains, and secure outdoor items that can be moved by the wind. Prepare your car for evacuation by having a full tank and having proper tires. Lastly, if you live in the cayes or near the coast be prepared to evacuate and have a procedure,” it continued.

Hurricane Lisa caused great devastation to Belize last November, reportedly destroying an estimated 500 houses and causing damage to nearly 5,000 homes. Citizens are urged to take the time to prepare a hurricane plan with their families.
