Belize face Nicaragua, 2nd strongest opponent, in U-19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship on Thursday night

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize will be aiming to remove Nicaragua from second place on Wednesday night when they meet on Day 5 of the XIV U-19 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship at the Belize City Civic Center at 7:30 pm.

Nicaragua currently have 13 points from three wins and one loss while Belize have 11 points from two victories and one setback. Both teams have lost to Costa Rica, defending champions and favourites to claim the championship again.

At this point, both Belize and Nicaragua are hoping for Costa Rica to stumble, otherwise they have no chance of winning the championship. Out of the three remaining opponents Costa Rica have, the team with the highest hope of beating them is Guatemala, who are also 2-1 like Belize. The Guatemalans, themselves, are hoping to beat Costa Rica so they remain alive in the hunt for gold.

At these tournaments, the champions normally finish undefeated, but if several teams, including the favorites drop at least one game, the tournaments get extremely competitive.

Guatemala will have that break Thursday in the first game at 2:30.

El Salvador (1-2) then face Panama (1-3) in the second game at 5:00 pm before Belize and Nicaragua close off the day at 7:30 pm.
