By Aaron Humes: On Monday, there was a tanker explosion in the village of Shipyard, Orange Walk that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage and injured one person. Two days later, it was a loss of life in Neuland, Corozal, where two little girls were killed by an accidental explosion of a kerosene lamp in the family home.
Police are part of the investigation of both incidents but the lead is taken by the Fire Service which will help determine if any criminality is involved.
The driver of a fuel tanker, Amir Leiva, was transferring crude oil to a storage tank at Crown’s Lumber Yard using a gasoline-powered motor, when there was a leakage from the feeder hose, causing a spillage that was ignited by a spark. This resulted in a massive fire that took 10 hours to put out and cost Crown’s over $200,000 in damages.
In the latter incident as explained by Police Commissioner Chester Williams, “…what we have gathered is that they may have been dealing with a lamp or something to that effect and they believe that they were putting kerosene in the lamp when in fact it may have been gasoline and when they lit it, it blew up, causing injuries to the individuals, I think one person passed away. Police are still looking into that matter, fire department is also involved and then we’ll see what the outcome of the fire investigation is going to be.”
