By Aaron Humes: After more than four months on remand after being accused of trying to kill his own brother back in August of 2022, Belize City resident Charles Patrick Herbert was granted bail by the lower courts for attempted murder.
Herbert, 41, a fisherman and father of a 5-year-old daughter appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola, represented by defense counsel Norman Rodriguez.
In March, Herbert was charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm, seven months after being accused of stabbing his brother Rueben Herbert during a family dispute.
Chief Magistrate Wegodapola offered him bail in the sum of $5,000 plus two sureties with conditions.
The Chief Magistrate ordered that he must surrender all his traveling documents to the court; he cannot apply for any travel documents without permission from the court; he cannot leave the country without permission of the court; he is not to contact the virtual complainant or his wife; he must keep 100 yards from the complainant; he must report to the Queen Street Police Station every Friday effective July 28; he must remain living with his common-law wife at their home on New Road in Belize City; he must also be able to show proof of residency to the court that he indeed lives at the above-mentioned address; and his surety must show proof of income, for example a letter from his or her employer that they are working.
Herbert’s case is set for preliminary inquiry on August 31.
