By Aaron Humes: The law prohibits possession of an article with a blade any time after five p.m. and before eight a.m. of the following day.
And so a Ladyville man found himself in big trouble with this arcane law on Friday, having been found in possession of an article with a blade, a machete measuring 20.5 by 3 inches in length around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19.
43-year-old Eckert Fitzgibbon, a yard cutter of Corner Partridge Street and Scissors Tail Street, Ladyville, Belize District, appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola on a single charge of possession of an article with a blade to which he pleaded not guilty.
Fitzgibbon also owes significant money to the courts for prior convictions for which he was fined.
But Chief Magistrate Wegodapola offered him bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount with conditions; he must report to the Police Station every Friday effective July 28; and his surety must show proof of address and income before he or she could post bail for him.
Fitzgibbon was also ordered to pay $200 towards his old bill by August 4, 2023 before he could be granted an extension. If he is unable to pay those fines, he will have to go to jail for 9 months
As of Friday afternoon, Fitzgibbon was unable to post bail and so he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he could do so.
