By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, the Belize Coast Guard’s (BCG’s) Summer Swim Pro Program for kids entered its closing week.

Fifty children between the ages of five years and 14 years old, primarily from Belize City, are enrolled in the two-week program. The program is being held in collaboration with the newly-established Belize Coast Guard Family Association (BCGFA).

Isabel Bennett-Moody, Interim President of the BCGFA explained that the program is structured to enhance any previous knowledge the participants may have as well as teach new techniques.

“All students were assessed for fear of water and any swimming techniques they already possess. So for the past week. All students have been exposed to several swimming techniques such as water adjustment which is the first step for the safety of the participants and to assess fear or anxiety. They have also been taught bobs to ensure rhythmic breathing,” Bennett-Moody said.

The students have swimming assessments later this week. The BCGFA is an organization established to further support, empower and build resilience of the families of BCG members.

Bennett-Moody added that the organization sees itself as a “vital partner to the BCG to further address challenges and honour the BCG’s vision & mission to have highly qualified professionals to protect our country’s maritime spaces.”
