By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is inviting applications from young entrepreneurs in the handcraft field as part of the Transcultura Programme.

Transcultura, backed by the European Union and implemented by UNESCO’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, seeks to stimulate cultural integration in the Caribbean and bolster people-to-people cooperation and exchange within the region and with the European Union. It particularly focuses on entrepreneurship and the development of new cultural projects, facilitating self-employment and activities for start-ups and scale-ups.

As part of the Transcultura Programme, the entrepreneurship incubator titled “Export development and market opportunities in the handcraft sector” provides an innovative framework for young entrepreneurs to boost their export capabilities and expand market opportunities. The incubator is a six-week online initiative, running from August to early September 2023, during which participants will hone their entrepreneurial skills through activities such as online courses, one-on-one mentoring, and a one-day online trade expo event.

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA), which focuses on promoting trade and investment in the Caribbean region, leads the initiative. The CEDA’s support extends towards the enhancement of businesses’ capacity and competitiveness, aiming to increase exports, attract investment, and create jobs to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Eligible applicants for the UNESCO Transcultura entrepreneurship incubator must be between 18 and 35 years old and must be citizens and permanent residents of one of the 17 Caribbean countries within the Transcultura Programme’s geographical scope. Applicants must also be young entrepreneurs with an early-stage business initiative or project within the handcraft field of the cultural and creative sector.

After the application deadline on July 31, 2023, a selection committee comprising experienced professionals from Caribbean Export and members of the UNESCO Transcultura team will select 34 young Caribbean entrepreneurs based on their background and business initiative/project.

For further information, visit the UNESCO website. Young Caribbean entrepreneurs in the handcraft sector are encouraged to apply for this unique opportunity for personal and professional growth.
