By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Sports Council of Belize today confirmed that Belize will be hosting the CODICADER Games for basketball and table tennis during the first week in August.

CODICADER stands for Consejo del Istmo Centroamericano de Deporte y Recreación (Central American Isthmus Council for Sports and Recreation). The Council is an arm of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

CODICADER holds regional games for students of different age brackets.

The basketball and table tennis tournaments to be held here are at the intermediate level for children 13 and 14 years of age.

“We are proud to announce that Belize will be the host country for the CODICADER GAMES 2023,” the NSC said in a social media post.

“From August 2nd to 6th, the thrilling action of Basketball at St. Catherine’s Academy and Table Tennis at Swift Hall will unite athletes from across Central America. Let’s cheer on the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship as we create unforgettable memories together!”

The CODICADER Games are normally held in one country as a mini-Olympics, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal flow of the games and CODICADER opted to organize certain events in certain countries until it normalizes the continuity of the games by 2024.

The Games being held are invitational tournaments, said Julio Llinas, Belize’s representative to CODICADER. Llinas said the tournament is in preparation for next year’s high school CODICADER Games to be held in El Salvador. CODICADER is holding similar invitational games in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

Minister of Sports Rodwell Ferguson said he successfully lobbied Cabinet for the funds to ensure Belize can host CODICADER. Ferguson also said the utility companies each pledged to contribute $150,000 to support the U17 CentroBasket Championship and the CODICADER Games.

“Panama will be hosting softball and baseball in August also,” Llinas said.

“We have Costa Rica doing athletics in October and Nicaragua doing all the combat sports, karate, judo, wrestling and taekwondo. And Honduras is hosting football and swimming.”

El Salvador didn’t host any invitational tournament because they hosted the Central and Caribbean Games this year.

Ferguson attended the CODICADER organizing meeting in May last year in Guatemala.
