International News: Guatemalans protest interference by court in electoral process

Posted: Tuesday, July 25, 2023. 9:29 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, hundreds of Guatemalans protested the interference by courts and prosecutors against the participation of Presidential candidate Bernardo Arevalo in the second-round of elections scheduled for next month.

According to the Associated Press, Arevaloโ€™s Semilla party was suspended and their headquarters raided last Friday.

Amidst the countryโ€™s electoral crisis, the international community has called for a fair and just election.

In addition, the law in Guatemala does not allow for a political party to be suspended during an election campaign.

U.S. officials have called the actions a threat to Guatemala’s democracy.

Demonstrators are calling on the Guatemalan authorities to allow for free elections.

The countryโ€™s political system has been in turmoil since Arevalo placed a surprising second among the 22 candidates in the initial round of voting on June 25.
