By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Dominican Republic were no match for Costa Rica dispatching the Central American side 102-51 in the opening game of the Boys Under 17 FIBA CentroBasket Championship hosted by the Belize Basketball Federation at the Belize City Civic Center on Wednesday.
The Dominicans, who led all the way, were up by 39 at the end of the third quarter. They easily pushed that difference to 51 by the final buzzer in the first game of the competition.
The Dominican Republic had a 50% field goal percentage, making 27 of 54 shots, while Costa Rica only made 16 of 50 for 32%.
The Dominican Republic also outperformed Costa Rica in three-point shooting, hitting 14 of 30 for 47%, compared to Costa Rica’s four of 17 for 24%. From the free throw line, the Dominican Republic made six of 12 for 50%, while Costa Rica made seven of 21 for 33%.
With the win, the Dominicans have taken the lead in Group B. The second game, featuring the other two teams in Group B, will pit Mexico against El Salvador at 4:00 pm.
Group B games come up afterwards. At 6:30 pm, Jamaica clash with Puerto Rico while hosts Belize close the day against Panama at 8:30 pm.
