Brodam Santos was not the intended target in Belmopan murder; wanted associate not cooperating, police say

By Aaron Humes: Belmopan resident Brodam Santos apparently took the bullets meant for someone else on Wednesday night, in the first murder Belmopan has seen since the events surrounding the death of Imari Galvez in May.

Santos was shot from a motorcycle carrying two gunmen which approached while he and two others were socializing at the back of his vehicle, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters. He was not known to police, but one of the persons he was with is as a “troublemaker,” and in fact may have been the intended target of the shooters.

This person, according to the Commissioner “has been interviewed by the police and no useful information has been obtained from him and we do expect that he would not provide anything useful to the police investigation. Nonetheless we are going to see what can be done to obtain information to be able to further the investigation.”

But there is another dimension to the story. The alleged intended target is older brother to 21-year-old Jalen Banner, who was caught with a prohibited 40-caliber firearm in Roaring Creek on Saturday. Though he claimed to be holding the firearm for self-protection, “because he knew that he was being sought by others to be killed and that’s the reason why he had it” as the Commissioner said, he was still charged for keeping a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

As for Santos, he had long been friends with the man believed to be the intended target and so could not have expected to be killed. Police investigations continue.
