By Aaron Humes: Their semifinal spot booked after victories against Jamaica and Panama, the Belize U-17 National Team prepared for a definite step-up in competition against Puerto Rico.
They were rooted on by Director of Sports Iris Centeno, who complimented their efforts and said they were ready for history.
Unfortunately, Puerto Rico provided a reality check, winning going away 91-60. They outrebounded Belize by 51-30 and absolutely dominated the offensive glass, picking up second-chance points and working effectively in transition.
Elijah Favela led the Belizeans with 10 points on a mostly poor shooting night.
Still, Belize finishes with five points and second place in the group and will advance to the semifinal round with a chance at a medal against a team from Group B; that match will be played Saturday night as the last of the classification games, followed by the finals on Sunday.
