By Aaron Humes: Already serving a sentence for possession of cannabis and a loaded firearm, 31-year-old David Sutherland finds himself in deeper legal trouble. Previously fortunate to avoid maximum time, Sutherland is now charged with the murder of Nicoli Rhys, a notorious gang kingpin from George Street who was fatally shot last Thursday on Neal Pen Road Extension.
Sutherland, without legal representation, was presented before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola where he was formally charged with Rhys’s murder. Due to the serious nature of the crime, no plea was taken, and bail was not an option. Sutherland was remanded back to Belize Central Prison until October 27.
Upon completion of his previous sentence, Sutherland was about to be detained for an investigation into Rhys’s murder at Precinct 3 Police Station, Queen Street. At the same time, officers arrived to search Sutherland’s residence, where they recovered cannabis, a loaded rusty nine-millimeter pistol, and five live rounds of ammunition.
Rhys was ambushed alongside another individual while working on his car, unable to evade the bullets from two assailants.
