Police suspect internal conflict in PIV gang led to likely death of Phozhawn Lewis

Posted: Friday, July 28, 2023. 10:17 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: His disappearance was not widely known about, but Police are awaiting final confirmation following a post-mortem examination that the decomposing body found in a vehicle last week in the Maxboro area is Phozhawn Lewis, allegedly a member of the Lake Independence-based “Peace in the Valley” gang, abbreviated as PIV.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, told reporters that “We still do have strong feelings that it is him, based on the vehicle and how he was dressed. I think the post-mortem [examination] has been conducted, I have not gotten the results of that as yet to see if they were able to identify the tattoos on his body which would have confirmed that it is him. But again, we are looking at that matter.”

Meanwhile, some persons were detained for questioning according to the Commissioner but there was not enough evidence for charges against them and so they had to be released. The conflict appears to be over an M-4 carbine that reportedly belonged to another gang but ended up with the PIV group.

Complicating matters is that PIV and rivals Backaland Crips or BLC are both affiliated with the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), although as the Commissioner points out, there are those who are not, including the two persons initially detained in connection with the Lewis investigation: “…let me make it clear that while for the most part, PIV and BLC are active members of LIU not everyone within those two groups are involved with LIU…being employed by LIU. So those two individuals that we had detained for Phozhawn’s murder, are not employed by LIU – yes, they are members of PIV, but they are not employed by LIU.”

Police investigations continue.
