By Breaking Belize News Staff: Punta Gorda, Toledo District is abuzz with vibrant colors, flavorful food, and traditional Indian music as it hosts the 8th Annual Yellow Ginger Festival today. With the theme “Yellow Ginger is our Root & Future,” the event seeks to highlight the strong ties between Belize’s rich cultural heritage and its Indian roots.

This significant historic cultural event not only brings together the East Indian community from all over Belize, but also invites Belizeans from the wider diaspora to participate in the celebrations. Southern Belize, often hailed as the birthplace of the Yellow Ginger Festival, becomes a melting pot of cultures for this festival where Indian culture comes alive.

An assortment of tantalizing Indian cuisine is on offer, including savory chutney, delicious Choka, and Takari. The spotlight is on dishes that incorporate yellow ginger, the namesake of the festival. The festival’s standout feature this year is a “chutney making” contest, inviting participants to create their best chutney using seasonal fruits and vegetables.

In addition to food, the festival also provides a unique educational opportunity with demonstrations by the community’s elders on the processing of yellow ginger root, and traditional Indian methods of coconut husking and grating.

The Yellow Ginger Festival promises a day full of delightful entertainment, complete with dance, poetry, and music showcasing the East Indian style. This event is not just a celebration but a grand display of the vibrant East Indian culture that thrives in Belize.
