By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belmopan City Council extended its thanks to everyone who attended or supported the celebration of Belmopan Day over the weekend.

The municipality celebrated its 53rd anniversary on Saturday, July 29. The festivities included live entertainment, a cycling race, day and night market, and a special initiative to grant youth startup businesses a free trade license for a year. Following the event the council took to its official Facebook page to express its thanks.

“It’s evident that with unwavering belief, anything is possible. The Belmopan City Council team is filled with gratitude and is committed to taking Belmopan to even greater heights. Wishing you all a blessed week!” the Council said.

Belmopan officially became Belize’s Capital City in 1970. The change came about in response to massive destruction brought on to the former capital, Belize City, during Hurricane Hattie in 1961. Belmopan was declared a city in 2000.
